The Instructional Design
The instructional design is very flexible and allows each participating teacher and teaching artist to develop a unique project. It is based on a combination of standard arts-based learning curriculum, Understanding By Design (UBD) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Furthermore, the curriculum assumes a “constructivist” orientation that places hands-on student activities in the center of learning. The student does not “acquire” knowledge. The student “constructs” knowledge from a combination of learning materials (books, web sites, etc.), personal experience, and social interaction. Therefore, all project activities will be rooted in arts-based activities that allow students to synthesize their knowledge into new art works and public service messages.
These art works will be shared on the project web site. They may include, but are not limited to.

The Arts in Education world has witnessed an explosion of interest and sophistication in the work of teaching artists, educators, researchers, and arts managers over the last few years. Even in the face of dwindling financial resources, the level of service and creativity continues to rise in communities around the country. Current research has elevated our work to a level of unprecedented legitimacy in the educational world. A ground swell of interest, talent, and hard work is forming at the grassroots level that has the potential to catapult this industry into the forefront of American Education. Funding presents a major obstacle to the continued growth of our profession. “Top- down” funding structures have been limited in their capacity to support this growing level of activity. Grant writers are overworked. In many cases, financial pressures have forced arts institutions to lay off their development staff in an effort to balance the books.

Teaching Artist Roles in Curriculum Integration

The Teaching Artist may function in any one, or any combination of these roles.

1.	Teaching Artist as Presenter- The artist presents their work in a demonstration. The work is connected to designated curriculum and students/teachers are lead through the process of “mining” relevant information and skills. The artistic work functions in the same way a primary source document would function for an historian.

2.	Teaching Artist as Content Specialist- The artist often brings in specialized knowledge, not only of their art form, but also the cultural/historical/scientific background to their work. The classroom teacher cannot be an expert in every subject, so the artist can share their unique knowledge to animate lessons and motivate students.

3.	Teaching Artist as Co-creator- The artist leads students/educators through the process of creating an artistic response to a given body of information, ideas, and skills. The artist solicits conceptual ideas from the students/educators that will give shape and form to the new work. The artist creates a draft from these conceptual ideas for collaborative editing, and a final draft is generated.

4.	Teaching Artist as Mentor- The artist leads students/educators through the process of creating individual artistic responses to a given body of information, ideas, and skills. The students and educators create the work individually with the guidance of the artist.

I find that in some situations, the artist plays the role of a “guest” in the school community, and in other situations the artist plays the role of a “host.” An awareness of which role the artist must play, can make interactions with school staff and students efficient and effective. Here are some guiding thoughts for the artist.
